Planting by candle light (well, sort of)

I came home from work last night very excited to discover I had received a delivery of bare root plants and bulbs. Now any normal person would wait till daylight to start planting, however, realising that they would have to sit and sweat in their little plastic bags for a week until I had a day to get outside, I set about rigging up lighting in the polytunnel!

Some might say crazy, I like to say enthusiastic!

It's still winter but today felt like spring.

Today has been a beautiful clear and sunny day, perfect for getting into the garden to get a few jobs done.  I sowed the next batch of sweet pea seeds, checked over ranunculus and anemones which are sprouting strongly (apart from a few mouldy anemones that smelt pretty rotten!), and watered some poppy seedlings which I had neglected and had gone a bit limp.

The day culminated with an evening bonfire just as the sun was setting behind the trees.  A day well spent, and now we can sit back and enjoy a glass or two of wine while dinner cooks.

Sell, sell, sell at the Christmas Market

Hello, my wife is working hard making up more arrangements and wreaths so I am deputising for her.  Why is she working hard this evening? Because we had a busy weekend on the Christmas market at Tunbridge Wells and have very little left to sell; as we are due to be at the Pantiles again next weekend, it would seem that she will have to wait a little longer for what will be a well earned rest.

For me it is a chance to re-charge the batteries as I was down at the Pantiles at 8am on Saturday setting everything up and then remained on the stall for much of the day.  It was a cold day, but that didn't put off the customers, who came well wrapped up and ready to embrace the Christmas spirit.

At next week's market we'll be concentrating on festive table arrangements especially for the Christmas table.  They'll be more bulbs in china cups and bowls too; people really liked these and the feedback was positive.  Some more pictures will be up soon so let us know what you think.

That's all from your guest contributor today (though I have enjoyed this so maybe my wife won't get a chance to get back on!) .
